Linda Grant

Growing up in New York City, Linda Grant had the unique opportunity to be exposed to and influenced by the great art museums and galleries offered. Her interest in the visual arts began as a child, was nourished by attending the Art Students League, High School of Music and the Performing Arts and majoring in Art Education in college.  She was always fascinated by three-dimensional media and spent many years working with clay both in sculpture and functional pottery. Her teaching experience spanned thirty-six years in Connecticut instructing students in grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade. She always felt it important to experience the creative process that she was cultivating in her students by being a practicing artist as well as educator. In 1988, while her children were very young, she was introduced to stone carving. This interest led to participating in a workshop in Pietrasanta, Italy and working with her mentor, Sara Aldouby. The past thirty-two years have been spent creating with this often-unyielding always surprising and unpredictable media. The variety of stone: color, texture and pattern provides endless opportunities for interpretation of form and content. Themes concurrent with life cycle events: marriage, birth, motherhood, and spirituality alternate with forms based in nature, both figurative and abstract. She often lets the natural shape and coloration of the stone take the lead in the creative process, many times completely changing direction as the work progresses. She has been involved with local community street sculpture projects both as an organizer and participant with the purpose of bringing art into the lives of citizens. Her artistic intent is to involve the viewer with both the inherent beauty of stone and have them relate to the subject matter in a personal way.
